In June of 1775, the besieged British Army at Boston had received reinforcements,

along with three new generals. The most senior general to arrive was William Howell.

The new leaders were critical of what they regarded as the commanding

General Thomas Gages' timid approach with the rebels. The first thing they wanted to do was take

the high ground north of the city at Bunker Hill and to the south at Dorchester Heights. Up until this time,

the British had an understanding with the rebel militia

that both sides would leave these heights as no man's land.

When the provincial army learned her the British plans to take the heights,

they decided to act first.

They formed a detail to sneak on to Charlestown Peninsula
