In late May of 1775, the siege of Boston was more than a month old. General Thomas Gage

held off the New England militia army, but was pinned down in Boston. He had begun to

receive reinforcements, but his only access to food and

supplies was by water, courtesy of the British Navy. Gage began to look for more options to collect

food and supplies for his army. He'd already raided several islands in Boston Harbor to collect food

and hay. The American commanders decided that they needed to

remove or destroy any crops or livestock on islands or near the coast that would provide potential

resources to the Boston garrison. Hog Island and Nautil Island both sat near the north shore,

separated from the mainland only by Chelsea Creek. The two islands

lay just east of Charlestown. Chelsea Creek was large enough to keep animals on the island
