Every night, every day you hear the bombs, it was flying, it was very frightening.

It is like you think that every second you are going to die, you know?

That is the feeling when you are down there.

For the last couple of years, hundreds of young men and women from all over the world

have been making their way to Syria.

A lot of them have ended up in the fighting.

Quite a few of them have died.

Their parents, their families, their friends have all been struggling to come up with ways

to stop these young people traveling.

The answer might lie in Denmark in the small seaside city of Orhus.

I'm Tim Mansl and for this week's assignment on the BBC World Service,

I've come to Denmark to find out if the so-called Orhus model of preventing violent extremism

really works.

My mother is from Denmark and my father's a Palestinian.

What did your parents say when they found out you'd gone to Syria?

My mom she called and began to cry and my father was very hard, you know, but he was said to.

This is Muhammad.

I met him at a mosque on the outskirts of Orhus.

It's a mosque that's attracted a lot of attention in recent months, but more of that later.

Muhammad in his early 20s, he was wearing a blue skull cap and he had a wispy blonde beard.

He told me that he went to Syria in 2013 to see if he could help.

It sounds like it was all a bit too much for him.
