I'm really excited to have these two in here with me.

I wanted to talk today about charter schools and teachers unions and the democratic primary,

as these things are kind of colliding.

I think we're starting to see a number of different candidates, you know, lay out ideas on

education. We've talked a lot, a lot of the media has talked a lot about student debt,

things like that. But you're seeing some clear plays to address K-12 issues.

And Bernie Sanders waited very dramatically into one of the things that I don't know of normal

people even care about this at all, but like people who write about politics for a living,

very divided feelings on charter schools. And Bernie clearly does not have warm feelings to them.

No, he has staked out some new ground in the 2020 debate by rolling out this plan that would both

explicitly ban for-profit charter schools, so charter schools that are run to actually make money

would be prohibited under the plan that Sanders wants to institute. And then he also wants to place

a moratorium on federal funding for new charter schools. I followed up with his office when they

or his campaign, when they rolled out their plan. And there's about $450 million line item in

1:47.1

the education department's budget that is used to pay for new charter schools to get up set up

1:52.0

and get up and running. And his campaign said that they would like to close off that funding
