Summary

Did Donna Adelson really think she could talk her way out of jail? The 75-year-old matriarch of the Adelson family, now facing first-degree murder charges in the alleged murder-for-hire of Dan Markel, took the stand this week—and let’s just say, things did not go as planned. Painting herself as a frail, elderly victim of the system, she pled for release, only for prosecutors to drop a bombshell: recorded jailhouse calls where she and her son Charlie discuss escape plans and countries without extradition. Oops.

Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer break down Donna’s disastrous courtroom performance, her apparent belief that she’s the smartest person in the universe, and whether she’ll take a plea or go down swinging. And then there’s the big question—could she flip on her daughter, Wendy? Or is this just the beginning of the Adelson saga?

Donna Aedlson, yeah, that Donna, took the stand this week and lets you say it did not go the way she had planned.

The 75-year-old matriarch of the Aedelson family now facing first-degree murder charges in the murder for hire of Dan Markell,

0:23.2

pleaded with the court for release, claiming she was a frail, elderly woman. Lots of sighs. Suffering behind bars.

0:33.0

This is how she testified. She described jail assaults, medical neglect, and sleep deprivation,

0:40.6

painting herself as the victim of the system rather than the crime. But then came the prosecution's

0:45.9

move, the jailhouse phone calls where she was caught discussing escape plans with her son.

0:51.2

And there's that. Charlie, you know, who the judge ruled, Bond denied, and the recorded

calls, admissible at trial. It was game over for Donna's attempted freedom. Joining me to discuss,

retired FBI special agent, Jennifer Coff and Daffer, host a Break the Case, a podcast, so you can get it

wherever you download podcasts and on YouTube. Very good interviews there. I was watching part

1:11.7

of your live. I just caught the very end of it the other night, but it was very emotional.

1:17.6

Anyway, it's good. And analyze Donna's courtroom performance, the evidence against her, and what

1:23.4

happens next. Jennifer, you've seen your fair share of high stakes interrogations and

1:28.4

testimony. What's your take on Donna's attempt to talk her way out of jail? Did her time

1:33.5

in there, you know, help help the case? Or did she just dig her hole a bit deeper?

1:41.0

Her hole was dug a lot deeper, Tony, and I can't imagine why her attorney thought this would be a good idea.

1:50.4

But my guess is, like we've discussed in other cases, that ultimately it is up to the client.

1:56.2

And if the client says, listen, I think I can get up there and look at how I've aged and I'm going to put on a

2:03.3

show and I'm going to convince this judge. The issue is they seem to forget or not look through

2:09.6

all the discovery and say, hmm, this might be a bad idea. And it just was a horrible idea. And there was no way that she was going to be released

2:20.6

even without those tapes because she was getting ready to go to Vietnam anyway before she was
