The opening chapters of the Bible are the seedbed for the truth found throughout the rest of Scripture.

He could have made it so that Adam never had to go to sleep. He could have created man and woman so that they had endless physical energy and resources.

So why does God make it so the lights go out?

Why create night?

Why does the Lord create sleep?

I'll tell you why.

Because it is God's daily reminder built into the creation, built into the very ebb and flow of life.

It is God's divine reminder that He is God and we are not.

That we need him.

There is an end to our resources.

So we return today to Genesis chapter 2.

We're parking here just for a little while on these

opening three verses that are all about the rest of God. Thus the heavens and the earth were

finished and all the host of them. And on the seventh day, God ended his work which it made

and he rested on the seventh day from all his work, which he had made made and God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it

because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Can I just tell you rest is not a dirty word?

In fact, it is a holy word. It is first connected to God. If you look at Genesis chapter 2 verse number three,

God connects rest to blessing and sanctification. That sounds pretty holy to me. God is the one who

created rest. We've learned that already. Today, I want to explain to you that God not only

created rest, God commands rest, not just in

the law. I understand. Everybody immediately goes to the Ten Commandments. Remember the Sabbath
