Gabriel Noah Brom is a visiting researcher in political science at Tel Aviv University and director of a project at the Tilos Paul Picone Institute.

He's joined us not to discuss a book, but to tell us about the situation in Israel at the

present time and also to give us a picture of in particular how the American campus protests

look from where he sits. He has a background in academia in the United States, although he is now,

I believe, an Israeli citizen and has been living there since 2020. But we will get into all that.

Welcome, Professor Brom. Hey, Mark, great to see a fellow UCLA alum, just when our alma mater is shining so, so, so, so, so, so radiantly

in the public eye.

I say that with some irony since the campus was taken over by terrorist supporters,

but you know what I'm saying.

That's right.

The, the Institute, the initiative, what is the project that you direct on that, at that spot?

Shortly after October 7, when I woke early that morning to the sirens like everyone else in Israel on Simchat Torah,

one of our most joyous holidays that happened to fall

on a Saturday, which is our Shabbat as well. I almost rolled over and went back to sleep

because we have something called the Iron Dome there. We get sirens, you know, every now and

then, and inevitably there's an explosion or two overhead and because we have this great

defense system we kind of get used to it but I decided I'm supposed to go to the bomb shelter

and so I ran downstairs and there were my neighbors we didn't know yet that it was anything special, but later

in the day and over the next few days, we start to understand what was taking place, in fact.

Yeah. What was your initiative at the Institute connected to that?

Yeah. And that was your question. That Institute connected to that? Yeah.
