In 1803, Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis to find a route

that would bridge the east coast of North America to the west coast of North America.

They were looking for the fabled Northwest Passage. And this was something that every country

was looking for. Britain, France, Spain were all looking for it.

And so in 1804, Lewis and Clark began what became known as the core of discovery.

And they were convinced, based on all the experts and what they were telling them,

that if they followed the Missouri River and canoes, they would reach the end of it,

when they would go over a small hill, find

another stream, put their canoes back into it, and coast to the Pacific Ocean, finding the

so-called Northwest Passage. The reason all these countries wanted this trade route is because

it would open up trade and they would dominate trade and commerce in the world of the 1800s.

It would kind of be like owning the internet today.

In fact, Spain even spent two war parties to find the core of discovery to hunt and kill them.
