In extraordinary deference to Donald Trump, virtually all Senate Republicans joined together

Wednesday to block a bipartisan bill that would have given Republicans much of what they

themselves wanted on border security.

Republicans had demanded that aid to Ukraine must be paired with border policy changes,

so senators from both parties negotiated a compromise over months, only to kill it after

Trump commanded them to in order to have an issue against President Biden this fall.

But the GOP's performance may be even more craven than it first seemed.
