Summary

This week on the podcast, Vanessa and Jonah do a deep dive analysis of the 1998 Farrelly brothers film, "There's Something About Mary." Despite its all-star cast, there is a lot of questionable aspects of the film that are rooted in the broader context of comedy movies in the nineties. We've heard about suspending disbelief but you've got to attain anti-gravity levels of suspension to accept Matt Dillion's spy technology, the film's convoluted stalker backstory and the way that the Farrelly Brothers are able to reduce characters to mere caricatures. Despite all this, there are some genuinely funny moments in this film by Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz that embody the awkwardness of adolescence, where the film really shines. Whether you've never seen "There's Something About Mary" (which we hadn't) or it's one of your favorite films (grow up?), you'll find something to take away from our expert analysis of this comedy classic.

Hi, I'm Vanessa Bayer, and this is my brother Jonah.

0:06.0

We're two siblings who love to talk about our childhood and nostalgia and how it shaped us into the people we are today.

0:10.5

Who are extremely good critiques, if I do say so myself.

0:14.0

Welcome to How Did We Get Weird. So we're pretty good critiques, or we're good at critiquing thing?

0:31.4

Critiques is kind of a take on critics.

0:33.6

Oh, got it.

0:34.3

Kind of like French for critics.

0:36.0

Yeah, because we both took French.

0:37.7

Cool. Well, yeah, I mean, that's a really good way to describe today's episode because, you know, some of you, hardcore fans may remember we talked about Shallow, the Fairley Brothers film for our first episode.

0:48.5

And today we're diving into another Fairley Brothers movie. There's something about Mary. Why are we doing this? Great

0:54.6

question. Vanessa, why don't you take that? Well, I think it's just fun for us to kind of take some

0:59.6

extra time to talk about these movies that many people find nostalgic. And, you know,

1:04.5

some nostalgia holds up, some doesn't. And I'm going to give this one. And it does not.

1:13.3

Now, it's just fun to kind of dig into these things.

1:18.2

And I will say, before we get into it, I know this is, there's something about Mary came out in 1998 and is a movie that many people love and remember from their childhood.

1:23.4

I just want to be completely transparent and say that the first time I ever watched

1:27.0

this film was last night.

1:28.8

So I don't have any real nostalgic ties to it. And I think for that reason, I may view it differently.

1:35.5

Jonah, when was the first time that you saw there's something about Mary?

1:38.6

I actually don't was thinking about this. I don't know if I ever actually saw it. I feel like I saw like parts of it on TV here and there. Right, right, right. I didn't see it in the theater. I don't think I ever really

1:47.6

sat down and watched it. This came in, what, 98? 98. Yes. Yeah. So I was like a senior in high school.

1:53.4

I don't think this was really on my radar at the time. I mean, yeah. I mean, it's a huge cultural thing, so I definitely knew about it and stuff, but I never really sat down and watched it beginning to end until last night also separately.
