Summary

We are overjoyed to have director, writer, actor, comedian and producer Michael Showalter on the podcast this week—who is also a director and executive producer of Vanessa's upcoming Showtime series "I Love That For You" which debuts April 29th. Full disclosure: we told Showalter that we were going to talk to him about John Hughes movies, but we ended up inundating him with questions about his beloved comedy troupes The State and Stella as well as what we refer to as "the Wet Hot American summer franchise." In that spirit, we also find time to share our summer camp experiences when we aren't poking fun of our hometown or learning more about Showalter's creative process. This episode also includes a lightning round of change.dork that sees our guest describing his perfect coffee blend in a detailed manner that we encourage you to recreate at home.

We do. Yeah.

In Celebration Today's guest, we dug out some letters that we wrote our parents from overnight camp when we were kids.

So I thought we could both read them really.

0:44.7

They're short.

0:45.7

Kids don't write long letters.

0:46.6

And give like your approximate age maybe that you were.

0:49.5

Well, it says on here the date this was mailed.

0:51.8

It says this letter was mailed August 4th, 1993. I wrote that on

there. So 93. I'm about 14. You're at North Star Camp for Boys in Wisconsin. I'm going to all

boys camp in Hayward, Wisconsin for eight weeks. That was the summer that kind of broke you in terms of

1:07.5

overnight camp because it was too long. Way too long. Eight weeks was too long and

1:10.8

you never went back. Okay. Dear mom and dad, hi, how are you? Camp is good. Guess what? Yesterday was the

1:16.6

awesomest day of my life. Me and my five cabin mates went to Dave's gun shop. We went skeet shooting.

1:23.0

I went six for 20 and guess what? I used to 12 gauge shotgun, two exclamation points, which is like, this is insane that they're

1:29.7

taking 13-0 kids to shoot 12-gate shotguns.

1:32.4

We also saw Jurassic Park.

1:33.8

It was pretty good.

1:34.7

It gets a 7.825 on my scale.
