Back in the time period, we called the Age of Exploration.

When the empires of Europe were sending explorers and settlers to the continents of North and

South America, Spain claimed large areas of land in Central and South America.

These continents were new to the Europeans, but of course they weren't really new at all.

They had been inhabited to some extent for hundreds and hundreds of years, ever since

people groups had come there during the Great Migration after the Tower of Babel.

The English, French, and the Dutch competed over vast sections of land in North America

in order to set up their colonies.

Meanwhile Spain set up their colonies and established their missions.
