Charlie Kirk’s shocking assassination on September 10, 2025 has sparked outrage, grief, and controversy across social media. As someone who critiques religious fundamentalism, Christian nationalism, and the toxic politics of the religious right, I feel compelled to speak clearly: Charlie Kirk’s death was wrong, but it does not make his beliefs right. In this video, I unpack the dangerous binary thinking surrounding his legacy, the way fundamentalist leaders are weaponizing his death, and why dehumanization—whether from the left or right—only fuels division. Join me as I address the tension between condemning violence while still challenging harmful ideologies.

I'll never forget scrolling through social media and seeing the headline, Charlie Kirk has been shot,

0:05.6

accompanied by horrifying footage of his brutal assassination. It would be exceedingly fair to say that

0:11.7

I was not a fan of religious right-wing pundit Charlie Kirk, and it would likewise be fair to

0:16.9

say that if my small platform had ever made it onto his radar, he would not have been

0:21.7

a fan of mine. I'm politically left-leaning, and though I grew up in religion, I guess I would

0:27.5

now identify as agnostic, though I hate labeling any of that stuff. My content talks about

0:33.4

dark issues within fundamentalist churches. This includes things like sexual abuse, as well as the

0:38.8

patriarchy's subjugation of women, racism in certain subsex of Protestantism, and Christian

0:44.6

nationalism. If Charlie and I would have ever shared a stage, it would have likely been as debate

0:50.3

opponents and not as brothers in arms. As opposed as our views were, I never would have

0:55.6

wished for what happened on September 10, 2025. This dark moment has understandably led to

1:02.2

strong feelings across party lines, and social media has erupted with a strong mix of reaction,

1:08.3

think pieces, and tributes. A quick visit to social media will show you an

1:12.7

AI-generated video of Kirk ascending into heaven with one scroll and a compilation of his most

1:18.2

offensive moments the next. Some who presumed to know my beliefs and perspectives better than I

1:24.0

have felt comfortable putting words into my mouth, both in my DMs and in the

1:28.4

comments of my very simple and minimal posts about this situation. As someone who feels compelled to

1:34.0

write and speak often about the intersection of religious fundamentalism and American politics,

1:39.5

I feel like complete radio silence about the Kirk situation would be cowardly on my part.

1:45.2

This article is not a comprehensive representation of my view of Kirk, his teachings, or his

1:50.6

organization, nor does it encapsulate the complexity of the emotions that are swirling around

1:55.4

inside me. I'm writing the short piece for one specific reason, to make extremely clear my reaction
