🔥 What if the fear of hell has been holding you back from experiencing true spirituality rooted in love?

In this thought-provoking interview, Brian Recker (former evangelical pastor and author of Hell Bent: How the Fear of Hell Holds Christians Back from a Spirituality of Love) shares his journey from Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) upbringing to progressive Christianity. Along the way, he unpacks how doctrines of eternal punishment warp faith, relationships, and even our definition of love.

We explore:

– Growing up under the constant fear of hell: altar calls, camp gimmicks, and conversion pressure.

– How doctrines of punishment fuel church growth, finances, and community control.

– Why questioning hell can cost pastors their jobs and reputations.

– Alternate views like annihilationism & universalism—and how they reshape faith.

– How fear-centered theology distorts family bonds, community, and self-worth.

– Brian’s personal stories of divorce, deconstruction, and healing.

– A vision of spirituality focused on love, justice, and liberation—not fear and control.

I do think it matters what you believe about God, not because some people say, well,

0:03.6

the most important thing is what you believe about God. And the reason for that is if you're wrong about God, you go to hell. I don't think that. I don't think God's going to punish you for being wrong about God. I do think it matters what you believe about God because what you believe about God shapes what you believe about the world, what you believe about yourself, how you do other people. if you believe that God is a punisher and that at the end of it all, God is going to organize into,

0:26.8

you have the saved and the damned, the in and the out.

0:29.6

That's who God is.

0:31.2

God is ultimately the great excluder.

0:33.9

Then, yeah, you're going to allow that kind of punishment and exclusion in your own life.
