Hello. And the Times, Matthew Syed. Hello, Matthew. Well, I've got to say, great to connect. We've never met, have we, face to face. No, we've spoken lots. Yeah, on the Sunday morning. Yeah. My Sunday Times column, I've just banged my leg on the table. But the only falls in horses, isn't it?

That's right, yeah, exactly. Lovely to have you both here. Right, lots to discuss. Let's begin with the Chancellor Rachel Reeves breaking housing rules by failing to obtain a license to rent out her family home. Here's the Minister for Policing and Crimes, Sarah Jones,

talking to Times Radio Breakfast this morning. The Prime Minister, in his letter to the Chancellor,

set out that he'd consulted the ethics advisor, who had basically said that the mistake had been made,

the apology had been given, the mistake had been rectified,

and that that was the end of the matter. The end of the matter, Manvine. Do we think it is the end of the matter? There's certainly a lot of thought being provoked this morning about, first of all, why the Chancellor didn't know the rules, second of all, why a letting agent didn't help her know the rules, third of all, why the rules exist in the first place and whether, if a bureaucracy is so cumbersome that the Chancellor can't navigate it, should it exist in the first place? Well, to be honest, I think that's exactly, that was my reaction on hearing all of this. I'm sort of slightly bored of, you know, the Westminster playground where, you know, Tories and the Lib Dems are having a field day with this.

Labor is insisting there's nothing to see here. It's no big deal.

Nobody, but nobody is talking about ordinary people who might be renting out their properties. And if the Chancellor can't understand the rules,

then why haven't they standardised them to a point where ordinary people will?

You know, as you say, she used a letting agent, presumably a local one, nobody goes miles away.

And if even they didn't know that this particular area needed a special licence, I just think it's become so hard to navigate a lot of these systems.

Most people, when they hear something like this, you know, will feel outraged when they read the headline.
