Red Sox plotting along without any real direction or momentum forward.

So I wanted to share this story because it's something, it's always stuck in my head for many, many years.

And naturally, just by default, I go back to things that existed or that happened when I covered the team.

And the, you know,

they sort of set the framework for how I look at the game, how I think about the game,

how I think about the Red Sox in particular. So years ago, I can't remember if it was

at a press conference or in a conversation off to the side, but Theo Epstein started talking about what the Red Sox put stock in

or what they valued when they put a roster together. And one of the things I remember him saying

was the Red Sox always thought they should have an above average player at every position.

And if that wasn't possible at worst average, they wanted nothing worse than an average player at any position, and if that was impossible at worst average. They wanted nothing worse

than an average player at any position, and they sought to have above average players at every
