Summary

Episode 287 features a lecture by Chris Brennan on the concept of reception in traditional astrology, and how it can be used as a powerful mitigating factor in birth chart interpretation. Broadly speaking, reception occurs when one planet is placed in a sign ruled by another planet, and the ruler of the sign aspects the guest planet. Since the signs of the zodiac were originally conceptualized as the homes or dwelling places of the planets, reception was conceptualized as what happens when a host planet welcomes and supports guests staying in its home. Medieval astrologers often treated reception as a powerful mitigating factor, which could make aspects from benefics even more positive, or alternatively make difficult aspects from malefics more constructive. In the first part of the lecture I talk about the history and philosophy behind this concept, while in the second half I present a bunch of contemporary chart examples to demonstrate how the technique works in practice. In this episode I'm going to be presenting a solo lecture titled

Reception, a Mitigating Condition in Natal Astrology.

0:22.0

So this is a really important technique, it's kind of an intermediate technique, but it's a really helpful and really useful one, so I'm actually pretty excited to finally present it here on the podcast today.

0:34.0

This lecture is based on one that I gave at the Northwest Astrology Conference

0:38.0

I think a couple of years ago now.

0:40.0

So let's go ahead and jump right into it.

0:42.0

Here's my title slide on reception and mitigating condition in natal astrology. So to set up the problem, in modern astrology we can tell, we can see that sometimes hard aspects like squares and oppositions or sometimes even conjunctions between certain planets can be very difficult, whereas other times the same squares or oppositions or conjunctions can be much more constructive,

1:09.2

and it creates this interpretive problem where we have this question of how do you know which way it's going to go?

1:16.0

Like how do you know if it's going to be really hard in that person's chart for whatever that square or what have you represents versus how do you know when it's going to be something that's more workable or a little bit more constructive in their life.

1:33.0

So modern astrologers oftentimes

1:36.8

will kind of chalk this up to just levels of consciousness

1:40.8

and they'll kind of say, well, it's up to the person to, you know, choose or to decide how that's going to work out in their life, and it'll work out more constructively if they're more spiritually evolved, or it'll work out less constructively if they're more spiritually evolved or it'll work out less constructively if they're less

1:55.1

spiritually evolved or something like that.

1:57.6

So they kind of write it off as an issue of like free will or spiritual evolution or something

2:02.0

like that.

2:04.1

And that's usually the modern approach is just to deal with it that way.

2:08.0

However, in ancient astrology, ancient astrologers in traditional astrology in general took a number of other considerations into account as mitigating factors which could push the interpretation of certain placements more in a constructive manner or constructive direction

2:28.5

or more in a less constructive direction.

2:31.7

So basically there were different technical factors that you could
