December 8th. We are on day six of the Brian Walsh trial, and this is the morning session recap.

I'll do the afternoon session later this evening. Let's jump right in. On the stand is Dr. Richard

Atkinson. He's with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

They bring in photos of the rugs that were found in trash bags.

The rug had blood stains and it also had a quarter inch long blood clot.

The witness saved that in a jar for possible future DNA analysis.

And then they freeze the jar.

They move on to the largest piece of carpet found in the bag.

When the carpet was being unrolled, there was blood as well as other clots.

There were also areas with a white, clumpy, powdery substance, and some of that was discolored

from the fluid on it.

I would venture a guess that's the baking soda that he bought.

He also found hairs on the carpet, including a clump of hair, and he put those hairs in an

evidence envelope.

They show a photo with a ruler, and there's a Gucci jewelry charm with no chain attached. On cross, he essentially is

trying to get him to talk about when someone dies unexpectedly. He says you try to determine a

manner of death when you do an autopsy. And the medical examiner's office is responsible by law

to investigate various forms of death, including a requirement you investigate

sudden death, meaning when the deceased wasn't apparent good health. He goes through examples

of how sudden death could occur like choking, autoerotic behavior, death by fear or fright.

The witness said an unexpected death is rare, but there's many causes.
