Have you ever turned down the wrong street or sailed right past your freeway exit when trying to follow GPS directions?

In those moments, does the app abandon your car?

Of course not.

Whether the need is to keep going or turn around or take a new route, you can count on it

to recalculate the way forward. One of the Bible's important messages is that we aren't doomed by our

failures, even if it seems like we've unwittingly or maybe intentionally moved somewhere

beyond redemption, God will keep leading us back until we understand ourselves as we are made,

spiritually perfect, beyond blame.

Many people in the Bible found the good in their lives triumphing over some rather glaring shortcomings, women like Rebecca Rahab, Bathsheba, an unnamed Samaritan outcast,

Anne Mary Magdalene, men like Abraham, Moses, David, and Paul

the Apostle. Jesus Christ exemplified the surest way out of mistaken thinking, and he expected

people to find in themselves more and more of the pure, divine nature

that we each reflect as an image of God. This momentous idea helped me recently in a modest way

on a crowded train ride home. I just snagged a primo seat when the conductor made me move.

My reaction wasn't as gracious as it could have been. Walking to a different car, right away I was

blaming myself for acting selfish and petty. But then I got the

clear direction to go looking for that conductor. When I found her, I sincerely apologized. I found myself

saying, I'm not that person. Well, her reaction was beautiful.

And by the time I got off the train, she had actually thanked me with a smile. Wow.
