Summary

This week, Vanity Fair tech correspondent Nick Bilton speaks with cohost Joe Hagan about the recent leaks from Facebook that reveal the company knew of the toxic impact of their platforms, including Instagram, on users, especially teenage girls. In a world in which the social media giants—FAANG, or Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google—are too rich and powerful to be contained by limp political and regulatory systems, “we’re left to the wolves,” says Bilton. After covering the social media world for a decade, Bilton says the only way to beat the media giants is to hack the system—ourselves—by reprogramming our behaviors, which are the literal coins of the social media realm. Welcome back to Inside the Hive. This is your co-host, Joe Hagen. It is August, dog days

0:10.7

of August. I am technically on vacation, but I have returned to alert you that we are

0:18.0

in reruns for this week. We're coming back at you next week with fresh stuff, but we

0:23.3

want to remind you that we have an entire archive of still very relevant interviews and

0:31.8

very fantastic interviews. This week we're bringing you an interview I did with our very

0:38.0

own Nick Bilton, who was the founder of this podcast inside the Hive back in October

0:44.3

of last year, a highly relevant, sadly, conversation about social media. Nick has been

0:52.8

covering social media for several years. He's read books about it. He did an amazing documentary

0:57.6

that was on HBO about influencers. Today, you're going to hear this interview we did really

1:04.8

about the power and the dangers of social media. The title of the original podcast is the

1:11.3

only winning move is not to play. This is a conversation that I think we'll be having

1:18.3

for an entire generation. This is why this conversation remains relevant and why I think

1:26.2

you're going to enjoy it. Sit back, enjoy. If you're on vacation yourself, this is a good

1:32.8

time way to relax. Just close your eyes, but if you're driving, keep them open. Enjoy

1:39.9

this week's podcast and we'll be back Emily Jane Fox and I next week with some fresh

1:44.8

interviews for you. Today, very special day, we have back with us right here, the OG, the

1:56.6

original host of Inside the Hive. Aren't you supposed to curse when you say OG, like the

2:02.4

mother fucking OG or like isn't supposed to I like that you're using the the MF word right off

2:08.7

the bat, like, you know, not even giving the listener time to hide the children. We are here

2:16.5

today. We're going to talk about a specialty of yours, at least as a reporter, social media,

2:23.2

something you have covered for years, done documentaries about, written books about and that

2:31.2

obviously is in the news right now for reasons we're going to talk about. I just want to start off
