Summary

This is a re-release of our original episode on the disappearance of Alicia Navarro that originally aired in April of 2022. Alicia was found safe on July 26, 2023, after being missing for nearly four years.

“I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I’m sorry.” Jessica Nuñez awoke on the morning of September 15, 2019, and found that note in her daughter Alicia’s room. Alicia Navarro’s 15th birthday was only five days away, but she was gone. Alicia wasn’t the type of kid to run away. She had social anxiety and liked to keep her inner circle closed. So who could have convinced her to leave her Glendale, Arizona home in the middle of the night? Jessica fears that the answers surrounding her daughter’s disappearance may lie in her daughter’s secret online activities.

In this episode, we also talk to our 13-year-old kids about staying safe online and what they think may have happened to Alicia.

Hey everyone, it's Kona here. I just wanted to pop in before we start this episode because after

1:38.1

it was released, I got an email from a listener that I thought was really interesting. Now, we

1:43.5

always strive to do the best that we

1:46.0

can in terms of sensitivity and language and things like that. And it turns out that we did get a few

1:50.9

things wrong here. In this episode, we refer to Alicia Navarro as high functioning. Now, this was a

1:57.5

descriptor that had been used in a lot of the news articles that I read.

2:07.9

And because this case was so recent, it didn't occur to me to really think about that language and whether or not it was up to date.

2:10.5

Turns out it's not.

2:11.8

As our listener, Kennedy said, quote, the distinction between high functioning and low

2:16.7

functioning is really just whether

2:18.1

or not the person is verbal or nonverbal, and the functioning label is more of a value judgment.
