Summary

Massimo and Julia visit Indianapolis for a heated debate, in this live episode of Rationally Speaking. At a symposium organized by the Center for Inquiry (CFI), they join up with John Shook, Director of Education and Senior Research fellow at the CFI, and the author of more than a dozen books on philosophy and religion. Sparks fly as the three debate questions like: Should science-promoting organizations, like the National Center for Science Education, claim publicly that science is compatible with religion? And is philosophy incapable of telling us anything about the world?

strategically, how science and religion have been interacting with each other in recent years,

and also philosophically, whether there are conflicts and where the conflicts and

1:26.4

compatibilities are between science, religion, and philosophy.

1:29.8

And we're entering into this podcast hot on the heels of our host John Shook's talk,

1:36.3

in which he voiced an objection to the establishment of this, what he argued, to be

1:44.0

artificial or nonsensical demarcation line,

1:46.9

where science is considered to have a range of legitimacy just within that demarcated line.

1:58.6

And then on the other side of the line is where other things are allowed to take

2:01.6

over, like religion or like certain kinds of philosophy, such as metaphysics. So John was complaining

2:07.1

about, John, is that an accurate summary? Yes. Hi, Julia. Hi, Masuma. Hi, John. I'm really delighted

2:14.6

you guys could join us here in Indianapolis. It's really terrific.

2:17.9

Thank you. It's been really interesting, and I'm excited. And cold. If you hear a shiver in our voices, that's because we're all cold.

In a refrigerator known as the State Library. Yes. A beautiful refrigerator, though. Let it be noted.

So, yes, I'm sorry, with that long lead-in,
