Summary

This is the loneliest century, says economist Noreena Hertz. Even before the pandemic forced us to stay home, loneliness was snaking its way through our lives, affecting everything from how we vote to how we work. Professor at University College London and author of the book, The Lonely Century, Noreena has some sage advice for businesses: about how less loneliness fuels more productivity, the bottom-line advantages of in-person connection over virtual interactions, and why values like kindness, community, and care are key to attracting and retaining talent. Technology is a double-edged sword, Noreena says, but we can use it to turn our isolation around, if we embrace the opportunity.

Hi everyone, it's Bob. Today we're re-releasing an episode from late 2020 with Professor and

Increased loneliness was a byproduct of the pandemic, but it's a condition that plagued

0:16.4

us before COVID-2 and certainly persists. Norena's research and insights shed light on our

0:23.1

individual challenges, as well as our collective needs and responsibilities, particularly the

0:28.6

impact of remote work and the importance of bridging connections for any business operation.

0:34.7

The human factor is so important for success with mental health and social health inextricably

0:40.6

intertwined. We hope Norena's words provide encouragement in a season and a world where loneliness

0:47.9

is too often unaddressed. We're gratified that your part of our community hears Norena's

episode.

This is the loneliness and tree that we have known so far. There is a thinking error that

1:07.3

this is the new normal, that this way that we've been forced to reconfigure how we interact,

1:14.2

moving from face to face in person contact to virtual contact is not only a function

1:20.9

of the times, but is the way that things will be. I actually don't believe that to be

1:26.0

the case. We are creatures of togetherness. We are hard-wired to connect. Business leaders

1:34.2

should be mindful of their response. Lonely workers are less motivated, less efficient,

1:41.3

and less productive than workers who are not. They're more likely to quit the company

1:46.0

that they're working for. The challenge moving forward for business leaders, but also

1:51.9

the opportunity, is how do we really create a sense of togetherness amongst our workforce?

2:00.9

Everything's at stake and everything's to play for. We can create a better world moving

2:07.9

forward, a world in which capitalism is reconnected with care and compassion and community

2:14.8

and world in which we do recognize that there are times that we have to suborn our own self-interest
