Summary
How do you stay focused and committed to putting out a fire while new fires ignite elsewhere? Mercy Corps CEO, Tjada D’Oyen McKenna returns to Rapid Response to discuss the expansive relief effort in Turkey and Syria since the earthquake, leading a grieving team, and how the org’s support strategy in Ukraine must pivot as the country enters its second year of war. Tjada also shares insights about the greater role businesses can play in societal improvement, and why altruism doesn’t mean sacrificing scale.

| 0:00.0 | This was like once in a 200 year earthquake. I immediately knew that because of |
| 0:06.7 | Syrian infrastructure and the fact that this was a country that had already |
| 0:11.1 | been battered by a decade of civil war that any earthquake of any size would |
| 0:15.7 | be catastrophic. All of our staffers survived but several at least six lost |
| 0:23.2 | wives or children and I had one staff member who lost 13 members of his |

| 0:55.8 | them at the worst times. |
| 1:02.3 | That's Jada McKenna CEO of Mercy Corps the global humanitarian |

| 1:12.3 | after Russia's assault on Ukraine describing on the ground efforts to help the |
| 1:17.2 | flood of refugees. I'm Bob Safian former editor of FESC company founder of the |
| 1:23.1 | flux group in the host of Masters of Scale Rapid Response. I wanted to talk to |
| 1:28.0 | Jada again because Mercy Corps is now on the frontlines of earthquake |
| 1:32.2 | response in Syria while also continuing to serve Ukrainians as well as Somalis |
| 1:38.2 | Afghans and the most vulnerable populations in some 40 countries. Mercy |
| 1:43.5 | Corps is built for crisis Jada says but every crisis is also different requiring |
| 1:48.7 | constant learning. She demonstrates the discipline required for any leader |
| 1:53.4 | dealing with complex and shifting environments and how to combine that with |
