Can you just describe what we're looking at here?

Yeah, so what we've got is a 3D point cloud from a lumenar sensor, which is running in a parking lot.

I'm in the backseat of a white Mercedes-Benz

Metresfann in Orlando, Florida at the R&D

facilities of Luminar Technologies, a startup that's working to build the robot equivalent of eyes for

self-driving cars.

And so what we see in the parking lot in front of us are, I guess, three cars that we can see without being shadowed.

We can see in these cars the window design, we can see tire design I can see the angled slopes of the

D pillars on the Ford SUV ahead of us this is Matthew Weed

luminar's director of technology strategy.

He's showing me how the technology works. In front of us is a monitor displaying what the sensor

sees through the spinning black box on top of the van. Think of how a bat might visualize

objects in black and white. Except in our case the scenery is bathed in rainbow

pulses, a stylistic choice that matches Luminar's logo.

We drive over to a nearby multi-story garage and park across the street.

On the monitor, Weed starts to navigate inside the garage.

Our sensor, the world's basically black already and we're illuminating it with our pulses

of light and so I can look into this garage completely fine as if I'm walking into it myself and

explore the cars up this ramp.
