Summary

Often, we think that when conditions are just right we can finally change. We fantasize about solitude and quietly retreating to finally tackle the big issues weighing on our minds. If only we had that peace and quiet, we could do it! But it’s often the input from others that show us exactly where those points of resistance are. If you find yourself irritated, frustrated, or resisting something or someone in your environment today, try embracing that moment as a chance to connect with yourself on a deeper level. that's going on right now. Now I don't know about you. If you are on your own, then maybe

1:13.0

this won't resonate quite so much. But if you're in a house or an apartment with lots of

1:18.1

other people struggling to find space for yourself, then this may well feel very relevant today.

In my earlier days as a monk, I was really passionate about meditation and I was always

1:28.9

looking for a physical space to go to where I could be on my own and practice. And I remember

1:35.6

showing up at one monastery and saying to the teacher there, I'd really like to go

1:41.4

into solitary retreat, be on my own for just for a year or so. And he looked at me in

1:46.5

any smile and then he chuckled a little bit and he said, well, maybe do some group retreat

1:51.3

first. And I said, no, no, I really much prefer to do solitary retreat. And he said, yeah,

1:57.3

but actually we learn more when we start with group retreat. He says a little bit like having

2:01.8

a rock tumbler or a washing machine. We put all the rough stones in there and all the

2:05.9

stones kind of bang against each other. And over time we sort of lose the sharp edges,
