over a 1993 talk that elder oaks gave at the J Ruben Clark School of Law on the

campus of BYU I believe it was the 20th anniversary of the existence of the J

Ruben Clark School of Law there are many festivities and elder oaks was

invited to come and share his thoughts for whatever reason elder oaks

decided to use this opportunity to give a talk titled gospel teachings on

lying that's correct that's the title of the talk it's not gospel teachings

on telling the truth it's gospel teachings on lying and both Jonathan

Streeter and I have spent a lot of time reviewing this talk in preparation for

this podcast but actually it was only while we were speaking during the course

of recording this podcast that both of us tripped to what it was that elder

oaks was actually doing with his language and how it was that he was subverting

honesty all the while proclaiming not only the importance of honesty is a

principle but proclaiming that he himself was its chief exemplar I think you'll
