Hi, thanks for tuning in to ancient Greece, declassified.

0:13.7

Episode R8, does democracy lead to tyranny?

0:21.6

In the run-up to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, an interesting article went viral.

0:27.7

A part of what made it interesting was that it discussed a topic that rarely goes viral nowadays,

0:32.6

namely Plato's Republic.

0:35.0

The article was titled, America has never been so ripe for tyranny.

0:39.7

1:20.9

various remedies to alleviate their effects, and that miraculously, those writings have

1:26.5

survived over two millennia for us to read and potentially

1:30.3

profit from today. They had no idea because our schools no longer teach that stuff. And so for many

1:37.2

readers, this revelation felt like that scene in The Matrix 2, where Neal learns that everything he

1:42.9

and his companions had accomplished in their

1:44.8

struggle against the machines was a repeat of what had already happened many times before

1:50.1

during earlier iterations of human civilization, and that in every one of those previous iterations,

1:55.9

those struggles had ended in failure.
