been enjoying our conversation with the incomparable April Ryan in her latest book, Black Women

will save the world and anthem and we were talking about how in so many ways you emphasize

the price that black women pay for being first in a space for being the smartest or most

accomplished in the room for excelling at just being themselves and particularly in

spaces that were not explicitly built for them and how that has translated over time.

When you're looking at the number we ended the before going to break talking about Mayor

elect Karen Bass who I have a lot of high hopes for but also recognize she's going she's

inheriting a system that has been largely built beyond her control. Now she's got to come

in like like Mayor Lightfoot had to do in Chicago. Mayor Bowser had to do here in Washington.

We saw the trouble that the mayor here in Washington had to deal with when the white man tried

to create an insurrection and when to blame her for the lack of response to his shit but

that's another conversation.

Yeah because she actually did try to create it up but she's like y'all got to come

and call me in first but no one was calling. He wasn't, Trump wasn't calling you but he

wanted to blame her. He was ill prepared for this job.

Right so you have these these examples out here April. How you know what is that voice?

What is that resonating sound that black women make as a clarion call for a country for

the country going forward? Will we see more black women emerging in this space? What does

that look like? What does that feel like? And how do you think the country responds?
