Hello and welcome to Quick Fix, HowTo Slate Plus segment.

My name is Rosie Belson, and I've been producing advice here at Slate for about a half a decade,

and during that time, I've come across a lot of solid advice.

The only question is, does it work?

So I've been digging through the how-to archives and putting our best advice to the test.

Last month, I attempted to break my screen time habits and cleanse my social media feeds. And this

month, I focused on a different type of cleaning. Spring cleaning. I may have told you about

my home before. I have a smallish, lofted studio apartment in Madison, Wisconsin.

It doesn't have a cohesive design. There's plants. There's knick-knacks. There's art I've either made or bought while traveling.

It's cozy and colorful. And it's also extremely hard to keep clean. To be fair, messiness is something I've struggled with since childhood. I'd like to

think my environment is controlled chaos. I typically know where things are at, and it just sounds

better if you say things are under control. But the truth is, more often than not, my room looked

like a tornado had blown through. Now, this messiness isn't a complete lack of effort. I organize,

and I feel like I'm always tidying up. Maybe there's an executive function issue in there,

but nonetheless, I feel a lot of shame around not being able to keep my apartment clean,

which is why, when approaching an episode on cleaning, I figured it would be better to actually

focus on the habits under the
