Summary

Why is my lettuce growing really tall? When your lettuce starts to grow tall instead of out, it means it’s trying to bolt. This means it’s ready to produce flowers and seeds. When it grows tall like this, it means the end of your harvest is near and the plant is starting to switch from producing lettuce to producing seed.

Why is your lettuce getting tall? This is a question I have gotten a lot, especially as I was

0:07.0

sharing on Instagram, the story of my lettuce this season. And what's happening is that your lettuce,

0:14.5

if it is starting to grow tall instead of growing out, is it is starting to bolt.

0:21.2

If you're unfamiliar with what bolting is,

At the top of that stock, it will develop flowers

0:31.5

and those flowers will eventually turn into seeds.

0:35.0

What does that mean for you?

0:36.8

Well, if you notice that your central part of your

0:40.7

lettuce is developing a stock and growing tall, it's probably too late to harvest, although you can

0:47.8

always clip some of those leaves and taste them right out in the garden. And you'll notice right

0:53.8

away if they're able to be eaten,

0:56.0

because if they are bitter, you will know it.

0:59.0

You will probably not be able to even swallow it.

1:01.0

But sometimes with some varieties of lettuce,

1:03.0

I'm able to catch it quick enough to be able to harvest it

1:06.0

and it not be all that bitter yet.

1:09.0

It just depends on how quickly you catch it. Also, some varieties get

1:12.9

bitter much quicker than other varieties. Unfortunately, whenever your lettuce and other greens and

1:20.4

other vegetables like broccoli and kale, whenever they start to bolt, there's no going back.

1:26.8

That's basically the plant deciding to switch

1:30.3

into its reproductive mode and it's not going to bode well for you in your harvest.
