Summary

You've probably heard it said that soil quality and fertility is paramount for a successful garden. You probably even know that compost is one of the best amendments you can add to your soil. But what about organic fertilizers?

I frequently get questions about organic fertilizers -- specifically, what to use and when to use it. For this topic, I turned to Joe Lamp'l and in this episode of the Beginners' Garden Podcast, we talk about organic fertilizer options.

Are you growing an organic garden this year, or at least trying to? If so, then you may have had the same questions that I have had over the years, and frankly, still have to some degree. One of those questions has to do with organic fertilizer. What is it? Do I even need it, especially if I've worked so hard to amend my soil and have it healthy

0:24.0

to begin with? And what's the difference between organic and synthetic fertilizers anyway? Does it

0:30.2

matter? Maybe you've heard that the plants can't tell the difference, so why should we? The good news is,

0:36.0

even though this topic is a little bit confusing,

0:39.3

especially for the beginning gardener, I have someone on the show today who is going to

0:44.0

demystify organic fertilizer options. I'm sure you know him. It's Joe Lample and he's been on

the podcast before, episodes number 91 and 92, where he talked to us about

Joe is the go-to guy when it comes to organic anything in the garden.

1:20.4

And frankly, he is a resource I wish I knew about when I first started my garden.

1:25.4

He has all the high- level knowledge you can ever imagine,

1:28.5

and yet he knows how to put it in a way that we all can understand. If you found yourself asking

1:35.0

questions like I mentioned before, or if you have specific questions on different organic

1:40.9

fertilizer methods that you've seen, like fish emulsion, blood meal, bone

meal, and things like that, Joe's going to answer all of those questions for you in today's

1:50.1

podcast. Get ready. You're going to love this one. Hi, I'm Jill, and in 2013, I started my first

garden, having no background, knowledge, or experience whatsoever.

2:02.9

Now I am embarking on my eighth season of growing my own vegetables, fruits, and herbs,

2:07.3

and I'm proof that you don't have to have decades of experience to grow your own garden,

2:12.3

big or small. I certainly don't know at all, but I can share what I've learned and bring

2:16.5

guests along who can offer much more wisdom than I have.
