Today's Q&A episode is about compost. I've had a lot of questions about compost lately,

0:05.8

and today's question comes from Nicole. She says that she doesn't have much space, but she wants

0:11.8

to start composting to help her plants. She says, what composting should I do? I'm trying to

0:17.8

decide between a small tumbler and a small worm composting setup, which would be better for my plants.

0:24.5

I probably only have space for one small setup.

0:28.4

That is such a good question, Nicole, and I know a lot of people are trying to figure out how to do composting, but especially if they don't have a lot of space. I have been composting

0:40.6

throughout my entire garden journey starting seven years ago, but I have not done worm composting

0:46.8

yet. I know every year I tell myself I'm going to start and it just doesn't make it to what I

0:51.9

end up doing. If you're new to the podcast, I did interview

0:55.6

Emily Luba of the Crazy Worm Lady in episode number 74. So she talks all about how to get started

1:02.7

in worm composting, if that's something that you want to do. But to go back to Nicole's question,

1:07.9

she's wondering whether she should just do regular composting in a small

1:10.9

tumbler or worm composting. To me, even though they're both called composting, they serve two

1:17.7

different purposes. At least that's the way that I view it. When I'm doing my compost, I have a larger

1:24.5

volume in which to use. It's what I'm able to completely cover my raised bed every

1:30.2

year, well, depending on how many race beds you have, but I can usually do that pretty easily.

1:35.7

And in general, it's just going to have more bulk to it. It's a way to amend your soil, your top

1:41.9

soil, and be able to continue to add nutrients and organic matter.

1:47.0

Worm composting is going to produce less volume, but it's going to be powerful.

1:53.6

And I use worm castings right now.

1:55.7

I'm buying them in a bag, but I use them more to supplement.

1:59.6

A lot of people use them in their seed starting mix,
