Summary

This is one of my favorite episodes in a while. David the Good talks about how to "Push the Zone" in your garden. Many of us want to grow tropicals, but we might live in an area that is traditionally colder and thought to be "impossible" to grow certain plants. In today's episode, you'll learn why this isn't necessarily the case! What is up everyone? Welcome back to our final episode with David The Good and today

0:08.0

we're talking about well I guess we're talking about the subject of one of your books.

0:13.6

Your books called Push the Zone.

0:15.6

And as the name suggests, we're talking today about how to grow warmer climate plants

0:22.3

outside the zone that they would naturally grow in. grow

0:25.0

in the in. And so, you know, both of us, David and I are in warmer climate zones,

0:34.7

but we recognize that of course most people are not. so how do you grow some of these plants that we all want to grow outside of zones that you typically think you can grow

0:38.8

them in and so I'm going to let David come in here what do you what would be sort of the overview theory of how to do this, David?

0:46.0

Well, basically you have to realize that plants, they are pretty much selected by the environment where they're able to grow.

0:56.6

Like something like a jackfruit, which is a big tropical fruit tree, largest fruit in the world. It's awesome tree, but it has absolutely

1:06.0

no cold tolerance whatsoever like cocoa. You know, they're like whole areas of the world which were colonized by

1:13.8

European countries just because they wanted that growing zone to grow like

1:17.8

sugar cane or cocoa or rubber or whatever else and so like there are all these things that only grow in specific zones. So when you get something, you get a place that's too dry and sandy a, you know, a plant that is designed to grow in a very moist environment will just dry up and die.

1:37.0

Like even if you try to plant chocolate in South Florida, the humidity is too low during the winter months it gets too dry in Florida and the cocoa just dies even if the climate you know is correct.

1:49.0

So first of all you have to recognize that certain plants have certain limitations.

1:53.2

But the other thing you have to recognize

1:54.6

is that actually plants are more resilient

1:57.5

than you might think.

1:59.1

And there are like really kind of interesting ways of encouraging things to grow outside

2:05.9

their range and keeping them alive even when people say it's impossible.

2:11.6

Yeah, yeah no I mean it makes it makes total sense and what are some of the things I guess the principles of how to push your zone let's say you're in zone I I don't know, six or something like that.

2:23.7

Like what are some things that you need to do to sort of supplement that environment to get a
