Hello everybody. Thank you for tuning into psychedelics. Today's podcast with myself, David Drapkin, in conversation with Hans Erickson. He is at HMNC Brain Health as a chief clinical development officer.

0:25.7

We had a really cool chat back in the summer.

0:28.2

So it's a while ago, but I remember ending the conversation feeling like, wow, I didn't know that stuff was happening.

0:35.1

I didn't realize that, yeah, psychedelic molecules are being used

0:39.3

just so kind of precision. And that's what he actually goes into talking about, precision psychiatry.

0:45.3

And having worked in psychiatry for quite a long time, particularly inpatient psychiatry,

0:51.3

I remember so many of the doctors I work with and even like the attendings and

0:55.9

the chiefs of the unit saying, David, we don't know how or why SSRIs work. We don't know

1:03.7

what they do on the brain, but we just know for some people they do work. But at the same time,

1:09.5

there's so many side effects that come from them and they don't

1:12.9

help, you know, so many people, about 30 to 40% of folks with depression, they just, you know,

1:18.8

treatment resistance is the term we use, they just don't work. So that's why we've got,

1:23.3

you know, these pharma companies trying to figure out how can we target different molecules for

1:29.3

treating those parts of the brain where depression kind of lives. And yet it's not just a

1:35.9

farmer play. There has to be, you know, more social, cultural, relational, epistemological components

1:44.1

built on top of what the molecule can do.

1:47.5

But I really loved hearing how they're using, for example, artificial intelligence to really

1:52.0

target the molecules into certain parts of the brain.

1:55.8

And for me, this is kind of deep science.

1:58.7

So I hope you enjoy it. For me, again, it's exploring the mind and the brain

2:05.2

and molecules. It's kind of like Star Trek and literally trying to find out new information and new

2:11.6

places, new relationships within the brain and consciousness itself. So I'll read out Hans's bio. Dr. Hans Erickson is a highly
