Rob Henderson grew up in foster homes in Los Angeles and the rural town of Red Bluff, California. He joined the US Air Force at the age of seventeen. Once described as “self-made” by The New York Times, Rob subsequently received a BS from Yale University and a PhD in psychology from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, and more. His weekly newsletter is sent to more than fifty thousand subscribers.

0:00.0	One thing that I try to stress in my book is that academic ability is necessary but not sufficient to do well in school.
0:07.6	So in other words, you can have a really bright little kid, but if they are mired in squaller and chaos and neglect that potential will never reveal itself.
0:16.4	I did a PhD in psychology at the University of Cambridge, graduated a couple of years ago,

0:41.4	everything, that they would have necessarily gone on to college.
0:45.0	But had they been raised in a different environment with different values,
0:49.0	you know, the two friends who went to prison probably wouldn't have gone to prison.
0:51.0	My one friend who was shot probably wouldn't have gotten shot.
0:53.0	So I don't know how much we can raise the ceiling

0:56.5	but I think we could raise the floor as far as how far down
