Rob Henderson returns to my podcast! We discussed his recent memoir “Troubled: A Memoir of Foster Care, Family and Social Class” and the rough upbringings involved in the child foster care system. He’s also a professor on Peterson Academy (you can see his trailer here: petersonacademy.com). We discussed modern dating advice, how to identify psychopaths, the long-term effects of hookup culture, does polyamory work? And much more. Enjoy!
Rob Henderson grew up in foster homes in Los Angeles and the rural town of Red Bluff, California. He joined the US Air Force at the age of seventeen. Once described as “self-made” by The New York Times, Rob subsequently received a BS from Yale University and a PhD in psychology from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, and more. His weekly newsletter is sent to more than fifty thousand subscribers.

0:22.4 | Yeah, these are the things that I'm kind of known for, the credentials, but before I... we did a couple of years ago. And as a result, luxury beliefs. |
0:22.5 | You know, these are the things that I'm kind of known for, |
0:23.8 | the credentials, but before all of this, my life was a lot different. |

0:28.4 | My mother would have visitors coming in and out of the apartment |
0:30.9 | at all hours of the day and night, trading favors for drugs. |
0:33.5 | I try to remember, you know, that I'm very much this kind of statistical anomaly. |
0:37.0 | I'm not convinced that even if you had put my friends in private school, amazing parents, |
0:41.4 | everything, that they would have necessarily gone on to college. |
0:45.0 | But had they been raised in a different environment with different values, |
0:49.0 | you know, the two friends who went to prison probably wouldn't have gone to prison. |
0:51.0 | My one friend who was shot probably wouldn't have gotten shot. |
0:53.0 | So I don't know how much we can raise the ceiling |
