Summary

Many parents worry about telling their child they have anxiety or OCD. Some worry about potentially labeling their kids. Some worry that it will make their child feel different. Others worry about the stigma the child will face.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival episode, I dive deep into the pros and cons of telling your child that they have anxiety or OCD. I also explore the pros and cons of reading children’s books with various anxiety or OCD themes. Many parents worry that exposing a child to other anxiety or OCD themes, will cause them to “catch” new themes and make their struggles worse.

Well, hello there and welcome to another episode of the AT parenting survival podcast.

0:28.2

Today I'm going to be talking to you about a couple of different things, but the main thing is do we and I'm using air quotes here and you can't tell do we label our kids with anxiety or OCD or do we not so telling them that hey you have an anxiety disorder, or hey, you have OCT, and that stands

0:46.0

for obsessive compulsive disorder. So telling our kids their clinical diagnoses, or do we not?

0:53.0

Do we just tell them, hey, you know, you're a little bit anxious,

0:55.1

or hey, you know, you have some upsetting thoughts or some bad thoughts

0:59.3

and sometimes you have to do things, you have ticks or habits.

1:02.2

Should we use euphem habits, should we use

1:03.0

euphemisms or should we use real words?

1:05.0

And the other question I want to explore today,

1:07.6

which kind of goes along with this,

1:09.7

or at least I see this from the same parents

1:12.0

that have the same question about labeling is I don't

1:16.3

want my child to read any books about this.

1:18.1

So if I do say yes, okay, we can give them a clinical diagnosis or we can inform them of their clinical

1:24.6

diagnosis then I don't want to have them read kids books or watch shows that

1:29.8

explain anxiety or OCD because I don't want them to get any new ideas. I don't want them to get any new themes.
