Some of you may be wondering why I didn't publish a podcast episode last week.

Well, it's kind of a funny story.

I had just finished up on a 42-minute epic episode on how to build an email list when Google

announced a new algorithm change that was going to be enforced starting on January

2017. And of course, that algorithm change had to do with email list building, specifically

with pop-ups. And the first portion of my podcast episode that I just completed had to do with pop-ups.

I will be circling around back to that content again for next week's episode, but for now,

I want to talk about the Google algorithm change and how it's going to impact bloggers

and websites across the world.

The penalty is known as the interstitial penalty, also known as the Google pop-up penalty.

On August 23rd, Google casually released a blog post entitled,

helping users easily access content on mobile.

The title by itself sounded pretty harmless.

If it were not for the fact that the Google Webmaster blog is read by most industry journalist, then no one would have even paid much attention to this.

But in a matter of hours, after the blog post went live on Google,

the following article titles started to make their way around the world.

From the Wall Street Journal, the title read,

Google Search will penalize mobile sites with interstitial ads.

Search Engine Land published another one with the title that read,
