The penalty is known as the interstitial penalty, also known as the Google pop-up penalty.

On August 23rd, Google casually released a blog post entitled,

The title by itself sounded pretty harmless.

If it were not for the fact that the Google Webmaster blog is read by most industry journalist, then no one would have even paid much attention to this.

But in a matter of hours, after the blog post went live on Google,

the following article titles started to make their way around the world.
