My name's Toby Young and I'm an associate editor.

I recently spoke with Matthew Goodwin, a professor of politics at the University of Kent,

and the co-author with Roger Eitwell of National Populism, The Revolt Against Liberal Democracy.

We talked about Brexit, the rise of national populism in Europe

and America, whether it's peaked and what its impact is likely to be on the future

of social democracy, amongst other things.

So we're speaking the morning after Theresa May secured what looks like quite a significant

victory in the House of Commons, signaling that she can get a Brexit deal through Parliament

if the EU is prepared to reopen the negotiation of the withdrawal agreement

and change the backstop. But Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council,

has already ruled that out.

or do you think they'll blink?
