The approach to criminal justice in the United States clearly doesn't deter crime.

And it in no way guarantees justice.

Yet this broken system gets bipartisan support from elected representatives.

For whatever reason, they've been convinced there is no alternative to an unequal system that

not only enforces white supremacy but imposes

anti-Blackness. Policymakers from both sides of the aisle understand it's an

imperfect system but they believe any issue can be addressed with reform.

Sure those reforms aren't always perfect but perfect isn't practical and only the

practical is possible so why even try? In the end their refusal to address

the structural inequalities at the core of the carceral state leads to minor

fixes that never really do anything. Well they do one thing. With there being a political consensus

that tough on crime policies are universally politically popular, they must be included in any
