Chapters 53 and 54

In the previous chapters

during Lydia and Wickham's difficult ten-day visit

Lydia remained oblivious to the trouble she had caused, whilst Wickham

acted as though he had done nothing wrong.

Elizabeth is shocked one morning when Lydia accidentally reveals that Darcy was at her wedding, a supposed secret.

Curious, Elizabeth writes to Mrs Gardner for more information.

In her reply, Mrs Gardner tells that it was Darcy who found Lydia and Wickham and paid Wickham to ensure the marriage, hinting

that Darcy did so out of love for Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is left stunned, unsure whether to feel pleased or mortified by this revelation.
