Chapters 51 and 52

In the previous chapters,

Mr Gardner follows Mr. Bennet to London

but reports that the search for Lydia and Wickham is unsuccessful.

Eventually, however, Mr Gardner finds the couple and writes that Wickham will marry Lydia if the Bennets guarantee him a small income.

Mr Bennet agrees, believing marriage

and assumes that the gardeners must have paid a large sum to secure the match.

Mrs. Bennet is thrilled with Lydia's marriage, despite the controversy it has caused.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth realizes that she would have now accepted the proposal from Darcy, though she doubts it will ever happen again due to Lydia's

scandal.

Wickham later accepts a commission in the North, and so Lydia and Wickham planned to visit Longbourn before they leave.
