In the previous chapters Elizabeth accompanied the gardeners on a tour of Derbyshire, which leads them near Darcy's family estate.

Hearing that Darcy is away, Elizabeth agrees to visit the manner.

As they tore the grand estate, a housekeeper speaks highly of Darcy, describing him as a kind

and generous master, which surprises Elizabeth given her previous impressions.

While exploring the grounds, Darcy unexpectedly arrives, behaving with surprising politeness.

Embarrassed, Elizabeth assures him she only came because she thought he was absent.

Darcy then invites her to meet her sister, Georgina, leaving the gardener impressed by his charm and manners, and Elizabeth quite confused.
