This is John Batcheek, conversation with my colleague Joseph Sternberg.

He's a member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal.

He's based in London where he writes political economics.

And in reflecting upon the violence of these last days across the United Kingdom

protests or mobs or surging lawbreakers

breakers ostensibly about immigration,

ostensibly about a tragic crime in Southport

the death of three young people, three young women, young girls, and the alleged

perpetrator at the time was a minor now 18. He is from the United Kingdom. He was born in the United Kingdom, but the

bad information pointed to the perpetrator being a migrant or the children of migrants coming to England most recently. That is not true.

But nonetheless, the rioting is aimed at migration, the migrants. and in one instance aimed at a mosque.

And here's Joe Sternberg analyzing

how we should think about the troubles in the parts of England that are not dominated by

media and politicians.

In other words, anything but London, Joe Sternberg on the rioting, very upsetting, rocking

the Starmer government right now.

More of this tonight. In London you don't see any of that because remember London is in the south of the country

and a lot of this activity is concentrated in the north of the country, which is also interesting because there's an ancient north-south divide here, and when there's unrest in one place who tends not to be in the other.

And so I think, you know, you, it's hard to avoid thinking about the fact that this is also happening in areas where there has been more tension over illegal

migration and immigration in general because there's more economic and social stress.

You know, these areas are not quite as prosperous as London is.

You know, perhaps don't have quite as much of the history of immigration as London in particular does.
