Hi, this is Steve. In 1955, in Squatney, London, two musical prodigies, David St. Hubbins

and Nigel Tuffin met for the first time. It was a meeting which would change the course

of popular music. Later, joined by bassist Derek Smalls, they formed the band The Originals.

But then, they had to change the name to the new originals because there was this other

band, and that was, never mind, it doesn't matter. Because eventually they became legendary

rock band, spinal tap. In 1982, criminally underappreciated a tour director, Marty DeBurgie,

brought his cameras behind the scenes during one tumultuous tour. The result is both intimate

and austere, a complex tapestry belying its fundamental stupidity. Joining us for this conversation

is acclaimed musicologist and sandwich expert Michael Ross, whose best-selling book,

Its Rock and Roll Bitches, was once described by Rolling Stone as objectively unreadable.
