Hi, this is Steve. In 1955, in Squatney, London, two musical prodigies, David St. Hubbins

0:07.6

and Nigel Tuffin met for the first time. It was a meeting which would change the course

0:12.6

of popular music. Later, joined by bassist Derek Smalls, they formed the band The Originals.

0:19.6

But then, they had to change the name to the new originals because there was this other

0:23.0

band, and that was, never mind, it doesn't matter. Because eventually they became legendary

0:29.0

rock band, spinal tap. In 1982, criminally underappreciated a tour director, Marty DeBurgie,

0:37.4

brought his cameras behind the scenes during one tumultuous tour. The result is both intimate

0:43.8

and austere, a complex tapestry belying its fundamental stupidity. Joining us for this conversation

0:52.0

is acclaimed musicologist and sandwich expert Michael Ross, whose best-selling book,

0:56.9

Its Rock and Roll Bitches, was once described by Rolling Stone as objectively unreadable.

1:03.8

So if you haven't seen this masterpiece of cinema verite, your only choice is to follow the

1:09.0

sound of electric guitar to our website, cinephiles.net, where you can buy or stream spinal tap,

1:15.3

along with every other movie we've ever reviewed. And if you happen to support the show on patreon.com

1:20.6

slash the cinephiles, right now you could be listening to a brand new cinephile short

1:25.5

on last year's predator sequel, Prey. So that's a cinephile short on Prey on Patreon,

1:31.8

and this is spinal tap with special guest Michael Ross, this Friday on The cinephiles.

1:38.1

Man, I should record all my previews in that voice.
