By August of 1996, the film Titanic was already an enormous undertaking.

Hundreds of people were working long hours, often overnight, on a production that had

little margin for delay.

So when crew members began feeling unwell late one night in Nova Scotia, the first assumption

was mundane.

Maybe it was exhaustion, or bad shellfish.

Perhaps just a long day finally catching up with people.

But this was different.

Some people became giddy.

Others were anxious.

A few were laughing uncontrollably.

Others seemed to be disoriented, confused, maybe even a little bit paranoid.

What began as isolated complaints quickly spread through the set, until it was clear that something systemic was happening.

Set painter Marilyn McAvoy later recalled that the experience felt unreal immediately.

It was very dreamy, she said, very surreal.

Within minutes, dozens of people were being transported to the hospital.

By the end of the night, doctors were dealing not with food poisoning, but with the effects of a powerful hallucinogenic drug.

Someone had deliberately poisoned the crew.

And nearly 30 years later, no one has ever been identified or charged. This is the story of the Titanic poisoning.
