The Secret sharer was written in 2009 and published in two parts in 1910 in Harper's magazine. It is critically acknowledged as one of Polish British author Joseph Conrad's best short stories.

Conrad was born in the Russian Empire in Ukraine in 1857, the son of a political activist and descendant of Polish nobility.

Although he didn't learn to speak English until his 20s, he is considered one of the great voices of English literature,

breaking the mold in his style with his non-English sensibilities.

In his writing, he draws on his experiences of colonialism and imperialism growing up in Poland which at the time

was split between three occupying empires and on his time in the French and British merchant navies.

The secret shower is based on an incident on the Cutty Sark in 1880,

when it arrived in Singapore where the first mate had killed an insubordinate crew member. It is a story of honor and dishonor seen through

the lens of a young ship's captain who has to battle with his own morality to make the right choice.
