Good evening and welcome to the sleepy book shelf.

This season will be reading you,

Villette by Charlotte Bronte. We know our listeners are as unique as our novels and lucky

for you our bookshelf is varied with lots of different types of stories to lull you into a deep sleep.

The following is a preview to give you an idea of what to expect from this season.

Villette is a novel by English author Charlotte Bronte.

She's perhaps most well known for her earlier novel,

Jane Eyre, which we featured previously here on the sleepy bookshelf.

Villett was first published in 1853 when Bronte was in her 30s.

It was her fourth novel following the professor Jane Eyre and Shirley.

Bronte struggled to find a publisher for her first novel, the Professor and a The Professor, and eventually used some of the same material as the basis for

Villett.

The Professor was only published posthumously.

Fellow authors, George Elliot and Virginia Wolf,

both lauded Villett as Bronte's finest work, saying it surpassed Jane Eyre,

despite being less popular.

Villett follows the story of a young woman named Lucy Snow, who travels from England to the

fictional town of Villett on the continent following a disaster at home. the She faces many challenges with the pupils, but soon finds herself in the midst of more adventurous

pursuits, and perhaps even a touch of romance.
