This is John Bachelor, conversation with Alan Tonelson, good colleague who v watches manufacturing

in the United States for many years for us.

Asking Alan, if the tariffs proposed by the Republican candidate, Helper hurt the automobile industry in particular.

The candidate, Mr. Trump, former President Trump, mentioned the automobile industry as someone to boost with tariffs

protecting them from the overwhelming factory floor dumping that happens

from the People's Republic of China.

Alan says that there is reason to believe that the outlook is, well, listen to Alan explanation

because the word cloudy comes up.

It's rather straightforward, especially since automobile assemblies, even under the current

tariff regime, and we're talking mainly about sport utility vehicles because they are heavily protected by tariffs as opposed to as

opposed to smaller autos.

Auto assemblies and that manufacturing which is still kind of labor intensive,

has actually ticked up fairly significantly over the last few months,

and it's been pretty healthy and one big reason is that

Americans are still buying cars at a very healthy pace. Now the broader

economy does seem to be slowing down although even that claim needs

qualifiers because a lot of the official data in fact all of the official data

that we rely on is lagging data and there are quite a few current
