Summary

This week we bring back historian, podcaster, and certified big guy Patrick Wyman (@Patrick_Wyman) to discuss the terrible 2013 Michael Bay film Pain & Gain. What can we learn about America's descent into fascism from this film? As it turns out, a hell of a lot. Check out Patrick's writing on Discontents here: https://discontents.substack.com If you want to hear the whole thing, get it on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/42263279 We support the London Renters Union, which helps people defeat their slumlords and avoid eviction. The events of the film are set in motion when a man, Victor Kershaw, played by the inimitable Tony Shalub, walks into the gym, starts training with Mark Wahlberg, Daniel Lugo.

0:28.6

Lugo has a crappy life. He's not banging any of his hot clients. He's like he knows he deserves the, he knows he deserves to be rich because he has the right attitude and everything.

And he goes to a get rich quick seminar.

0:42.3

Well, he is hosted by the most annoying person in all of American acting.

0:46.8

But that's, that's jumping slightly ahead because we are.

0:49.9

Well, it is because what it is is that he, his story of how he got the job at the gym is that he says,

I'll triple your membership in three months.

0:58.7

If I don't, I'll quit.

0:59.7

But I had some trouble with the law because he used to have the fake identity of David Lowenstein,

1:05.0

where he ran a pyramid scheme preying on elderly Florida pensioners.

1:10.3

Which happens in like a three second montage.

1:13.3

And the guy who's hire him is like, yeah, it's fine.

1:16.0

Yeah.

1:16.2

If this had been now, he would have had like a scheme like doing subprime mortgages on like

1:20.8

houses that didn't exist or something.

1:23.2

And what I find very interesting, again, what I find very interesting is in his sentencing hearing for his get rich quick scheme, he makes a speech where he acknowledges his guilt and assumes that because he has acknowledged his guilt and America is the land of second chances, he will be found not guilty. He says, it will never happen again. I recognize I use my superior intelligence for non-doing, wrongdoing.

1:46.2

But now I realize there is no shortcut to the American dream.

1:49.5

This is America, land of the brave, and home of the second chances.

1:53.2

And then the judge obviously just says guilty.

1:55.8

And Mark Wahlberg said, yeah, I know.

1:58.7

I already said I was guilty.

1:59.8

So why do you say it?
